Out of the Past: Slot machines an issue for law enforcement

Service clubs like Lions International have long been a part of the history of Wallowa County. For many years, the local Lions conducted a light bulb sale. Does anyone know the identity of the two gentlemen selling light bulbs and the customer on the left? Also what year this may have been taken?

Several cases of influenza having been definitely located in Enterprise, the physicians have ordered that the city take steps to check its spread as far as possible. School is closed and public gatherings of all kinds are forbidden. Billiard and pool halls may not open. Children are ordered not to come downtown except when absolutely necessary. People are asked not to congregate on the streets or anywhere.

The United War Work campaign is to be conducted Nov. 11-18. Wallowa County is asked to contribute a little more than $10,000 for the following war causes: YMCA, YWCA, Knights of Columbus, Salvation Army, Jewish Welfare Board, War Camp Community Service and American Library Association. Wade Siler is county chairman.

Fruit pits and nut shells, which have been gathered in nearly every household, may be taken to the office of Supt. J. C. Conley at the courthouse. They should be turned over as soon as any quantity has accumulated, for they are needed at once by the government, which extracts the carbon from them for making gas masks for the soldiers. The pits and shells also may be left at most of the stores in the county.

Burglars broke into three business houses, raiding slot machines. At Wallowa, the Tippett poolhall was broken into and two slot machines and a rifle and shotgun were taken. At Baird’s variety store in Wallowa, another slot machine was seized. In Minam the Fleser store was robbed of two slot machines. Police are interested in the burglary aspects of the case but are largely indifferent about the fate of the slot machines. The machines being illegal in the eyes of the law, are not the type of property in which the law enforcement officials and courts will interest themselves.

Cleve Whitmore of Freewater met with a surprise this week when he took his buck into Freewater to get it weighed, and it topped the scales at 290 pounds. It was killed in the east woods from Enterprise and was the largest buck most people here have ever seen.

James Huffman, 24, an employee of the J. Herbert Bate Co. sawmill at Wallowa, was critically injured last Friday when his clothing was caught in a counter shaft as he was working on a belt, and he was whirled into the machinery. His neck was broken and it is feared that the spinal cord was severed. He was rushed to the hospital in La Grande where he is still fighting for his life.
