"I would actually have preferred to have a challenger," he admitted, but is nevertheless looking forward to serving on the council for another four years.

"I'd like to give something back (to the community)," he says. "Jay is not doing a bad job, I just think I have a lot of time and energy to give and I think I could do a lot of good things for the town I love."

"If it doesn't pass, however, it's something we will have to take back to the drawing board and see why it didn't pass," Boeke added. "The need (for a new police department) isn't going away. This current station is a pretty tired building, and undersized for the services they provide.

In addition to his work in community theater, Johnson is a member of both Mt. Tabor Masonic Lodge and the local Shriners, as well as the Detroit Lakes United Methodist Church, where he sings with the church choir. Now retired, Johnson says he has both the time and inclination to seek public office — something that he has done once before, in 2014, when he offered a strong challenge to then-incumbent David Aune.

In Ward 2, incumbent Jay Schurman will face challenger Rick Johnson, while Ward 1 Alderman Dan Wenner and Ward 3 Alderman Matt Boeke are running unopposed.

Like his fellow council members, Wenner is a strong proponent of the local option sales tax to fund a new police department facility.

If the sales tax referendum doesn't pass, however, the need will still be there to address, through alternative means.

"I like to think of myself as an intelligent, forward-thinking person," said Johnson. "I think I can address any situation, study it, and come up with a reasonable answer, just by using common sense... something that many politicians, from what I see on the news, aren't really using these days."

Four years ago, Boeke made an unsuccessful bid for an alderman at large position on the City Council, then was appointed three years ago to fill the Ward 3 seat vacated by Jay Schurman when he moved into Ward 2 and applied for the seat being vacated by David Aune.

"I said it sounded like fun, and I ended up doing that for the summer, in the Wisconsin Dells," Johnson said.
